Preface

This guide is a companion to another of my guides entitled Guide to Japanese Woodblock Prints of Flowers and Birds. The difference between the two guides is the printing method used by Japanese artists to make their prints. This guide considers prints made using non-woodblock techniques while the previous guide only considered woodblock prints. Woodblock printing was the only method used by Japanese artists until the late 1800s.

Since then Japanese artists have used additional methods to make flower-bird prints including intaglio, lithography, stencil, screenprinting, eraser, digital, linocut and giclee. This book is a guide to Japanese prints made using the latter methods. I used the same format for both guides to provide an overview of the species, artists and styles used for Japanese flower-bird prints.  Flowers, birds, artists and artistic styles are identified and described with the help of pictures and the results of a quantitative analysis of picture characteristics. I hope this information aids your exploration of Japanese flower-bird prints.
